No, you do not need a rental car if you plan to stay in Vancouver proper.
Most visitors spend time in downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown, and Kitsilano. All sit close together.
SkyTrain, buses, walking, and short rides cover them fast and cheaply. In fact, I can often get across downtown quicker on foot than friends stuck hunting for parking 🚶♂️
A car starts to help only if plans include Whistler, the Sea to Sky Highway, deep North Shore hikes, or another of our 15 Best Vancouver day trips. Even then, rentals can work better for a day or two, not the whole stay.

A few practical tips that save time and money
The SkyTrain runs straight from the airport to downtown in under 30 minutes. No traffic. No tolls. It drops you near most hotels.
Car rentals downtown cost more, and parking adds up fast. Hotel parking alone can hit $40–$50 per night in extreme cases.
Car-share apps like Evo work well for short trips. I use them for Costco runs and North Shore drives, then return the car and forget about it. But they tend to be targeted more towards locals.
Transit passes pay off quickly. A day pass often costs less than two short taxi rides. Personally, I’d pair transit with the occasional Uber trip.
So who should rent a car?
A rental makes sense if your trip centers on outdoor areas far from transit. Think day trips to Whistler, Squamish, Lynn Canyon, or some of Vancouver’s best beaches early in the morning.
My personal rule stays simple. City trip? No car. Nature-heavy trip? Rent one for the days you need it, then drop it.
That said, if you’ve got a young family in tow, are an elderly couple, or value convenience over cost savings, a car rental also makes a lot of sense.
